The History

Our History

Malgrate, overlooking Lake Como opposite Lecco, has ancient origins dating back to Roman times, when it was known as Antesitum, a small settlement of fishermen and boatmen.

In the Middle Ages, it became a fiefdom of the powerful Malaspina family in 1351, who held it until 1610. During the 15th century, it was involved in conflicts between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Florence: in 1442, the troops of Filippo Maria Visconti destroyed the castle of Malgrate, punishing the family for betraying political alliances.

In the 17th century, the fief passed to the Ariberti family of Cremona, then to the Freganeschi of Milan until the end of the 18th century, when with the arrival of Napoleon, feudal privileges were abolished.

Over time, Malgrate transformed from an agricultural village into an industrial center linked to nearby Lecco, while still maintaining its historical roots.
