Getting Lost in Malgrate

To savor the beauty of Malgrate, one must get lost inside and walk through its internal streets to discover the identity of this town and meet its inhabitants.

Malgrate should not be merely passed through, but explored without a specific destination as if it were a big city; only then can one grasp its uniqueness. Walking uphill through its small streets, you can see the houses of the past and historic villas. There’s silence, few cars in the historic center, and people greet each other as was the good habit once in small towns. The inhabitants almost all know each other, the parish church of San Leonardo and the Proloco of Malgrate create community and cohesion.

The Parini Arcade

Overlooking the lake “is Casa Reina, the Parini Arcade – open on the ground floor for pedestrian passage – houses the mural painting by Massimo Campigli ‘The Beach’ (1937), light passes through it, it’s three meters of beauty for those who choose to cross it or make a stop, next to it” is the perfectly restored town washhouse that reminds of past traditions and the value of slow life where daily domestic activities marked the days and represented precious opportunities for sharing among people.

The Municipality of Malgrate

Going up via Agudio, you reach the seat of the Malgrate Town Hall, Palazzo Agudio which groups several buildings connected to each other between 1780-1790 by the family from which it takes its name.

Here the political and administrative activities of the town take place, and in the fine season, the garden hosts events and meetings open to the public.

The Porto district stretches along the lake shores, between the port area and the promenades connecting bridges and parks. Among its distinctive elements, the Old Bridge stands out, a historic link between Malgrate and Lecco, which gives the area a special charm and a central role in pedestrian and bicycle mobility.

Milan is close, about 50 kilometers separate it from Malgrate, but here you are truly immersed in “another dimension of life, not only because it’s quieter – it’s a town, not a big city – but especially because it’s on a human” scale.
